Halong Bay – The green lagoon of Vietnam

View on Halong Bay - travel Vietnam - World Unesco Herritage

Halong Bay, one of the 7 wonders of nature.
A true place to wander…

When people think of Vietnam, Halong Bay is one of the view places that drops out instantly. No ‘wonder’ at all, because it is seen as one of  ‘seven world wonders of nature’. This World Unesco Herritage is a true beauty by itself. We were amazed by all those limestone islands just popping out everywhere you look. Just for the facts, they say that there are about 3500 limestone islands in this area. The view is amazing, so make sure you have your camera ready.

How to get to Halong Bay

The most common way to go to Halong Bay is to book a day- or two/three-day tour  in Hanoi. We booked our tour at the Gecko Café in the center of Hanoi.

The Kebab Shack - Hoi An Vietnam

Lovely good restaurants in Hoi An – Vietnam

Restaurants in Hoi An: The Kebab Shack - Hoi An Vietnam

A ‘walhalla’ for foodies
Restaurants in Hoi-An, enough to choose from

Once we were in Hoi An we really had to  chill out and relax from our trip, so we stayed there for a few days. Just hanging at the beach, but also enjoying the many good restaurants in Hoi An has to offer 🙂
Below you will find the highlights we visited, and the ones you should absolute visit when your heading to Hoi An too.

Burger at the Kebab Shack in Hoi An VietnamTHE KEBAB SHACK

Ok, I don’t want to be a culture crasher or ‘lowbrow’ (we really enjoyed the real Vietnamese food everyday during our trip), but men, we wore longing for a good burger! And yes, we finally found the Kebab Shack via Tripadvisor. It was almost like a relief for us, finding that spot. For Vietnamese understandings, the burger was really of good quality and taste. Of course we had eaten one or two other burgers during our backpacking trip in Vietnam, but this one tasted like home. ♥

But that’s not strange, it appeared that the owner is a real nice and crazy English man. Married to his lovely Vietnamese wife. Next to that delicious burger we enjoyed his conversations and funny English jokes. He is an English teacher at Da Nang in the weekends to learn Vietnamese children native speaking English. He loves to teach them by jokes like the ‘A string walks into a bar….” (See the link if you want to read the full joke :)) Of course he was testing us too if could really follow native English… We nearly passed. 🙂

Well, long story short. If you want to enjoy a good European burger for a  Vietnamese price in Vietnam, and like to talk native English, then go to the Kebab Shack. It is located a bit outside the city center, so it was a bit of a search, but if you click this link on Tripadvisor you will find them in your google maps.  Enjoy your burger or kebab!

THE CHEF

Restaurants in Hoi An: Beautiful lampions at the Chef in Hoi An VietnamThis restaurant is an absolute hidden jewel. The rooftop terrace has by far the most amazing view over ancient Hoi An. But, you have to work for it. 🙂 It was quite hard to find. If you walk with your google maps app then you will wonder when you  reach the final destination. Because you will find a sort of gift shop first.. Well lucky you, you are there! You just have to enter the shop and then have to go upstairs.

Once you get upstairs you will be welcomed by beautiful lampions hanging in trees and that great view over Hoi An. Also a lot of locals, mostly from Da Nang, will be there too. It is quite a popular restaurant, so it wise to make a reservation in front. Just a small travel trip from us for you. 🙂

Oh and another plus, they also have good wines over here! So yes, it is a bit more expensive (not for European standards) then the real local Vietnamese restaurants, but it  is really worth it. Want to know the address? You can find the link here.

Restaurants in Hoi An: Good restaurant - The Little Menu in Hoi An - VietnamTHE LITTLE MENU

When you’re looking for a romantic night out together, you should visit this cute restaurant in Hoi An. This is also one of the few restaurants in Vietnam we have spotted with good wines. The staff was really friendly and they sure know and understand their products. So ask for a recommendation dish and you will get surprised!

Next to the good service and fantastic food, the restaurants looks very pretty too. You will be welcomed with rough looking walls, beautiful lights made of bamboo and an open kitchen. There is enough to see and wander in this restaurant for a complete night out.

If you like fish, then you should try the white tuna. It was a real treat!

Restaurants in Hoi An: Good restaurant - The Little Menu in Hoi An - Vietnam - nice dishOne side note for the Little Menu, it will costs you a few Vietnamese dong extra. So if you only want to dine at the cheaper ‘backpacking’ restaurants, you can skip this one.  But, in comparison with good European restaurants where you pay around €35,- p.p. per 3-courses, you pay here €35,- in total including wines. So I would still say, go here and enjoy all those lovely tastes and dishes from Vietnam. You can find the tripadvisor reviews from this restaurant in Hoi An here.

We hope you will love these wonderful restaurants in Hoi An. Enjoy!

Good food – good mood

Riding bycicle in Hoi An - VietnamWe arrived at lively Hoi An after a long day trip by motorcycle from Hué to Hoi An. We were welcomed in her busy streets with lots of tinkly melodies from passing cyclists. Everywhere in Vietnam you will find people cycling, but here in Hoi An it is far most trending and common to ride a bicycle. Next to these ‘tinkly melodies’ we were also welcomed with the first good wine in Vietnam!

As a typical wine lover, it was hard to find good wines in the Vietnamese restaurants. Only in the bigger city’s, wine is more  comparable with the European quality as we are used too. In the rest of beautiful Vietnam, don’t expect high class wine. They focus more on the food or the fresh pressed juices then on the wine.

Good wine in Bon restaurant Hoi An - VietnamBut yes, in Hoi An we had finally found the first place where we could enjoy some good and cold wine.  This lovely restaurant is not one you will step in directly because it looks very modest and it is located a bit remotely. But this absolutely kind and nice Vietnamese lady made sure we could have that good tasting wine.   Ok, it was a bit of a challenge to made here clear that we ‘needed’ wine, here English was very poor, but luckily here daughter understood and arranged it. After speaking with ‘hand and feets’ you can enjoy that wine at ‘Bon Restaurant‘.  See the link for the Tripadvisor recommendations.

Great surroundings – great experience

View on river Vy Hoa Hoi An VillasAfter our refreshing wine and handing over the bike at the motor-trip company we headed to our hotel  Vy Hoa Hoi An Villas. After the first ‘wow-moment’ we had earlier that day when entering Hoi An, we had an ‘hell-yeah’ moment when arriving at this beautiful hotel in Hoi An.  It is a very small scale villa runned by  two sisters with great hospitality. Just a few minutes away from  An Bang beach and with an fantastic view over the river.

The rooms are very clean and spacious, but most of all the pool is a real treatment. We really felt like king and queen when relaxing and enjoying Hoi An.  Because the small scale atmosphere of Vy Hoa Hoi An Villas we were very lucky to have the pool private for ourselves very often. And with the view on the palmtrees and reel good Vietnamese lemon juice we were in heaven.

Another very big plus about this hotel is the free supply of bicycles. You can borrow them to visit ancient Hoi An city or go to An Bang beach. Great service! But most of all it is very nice to feel more than welcome by the sisters. They are very kind and will give you good insider tips. Next to that they are very curious, especially when you come from Europe. When you are a couple, they will definitely ask you if you are married or not. If not and your living together (like we are), they will ask you many more questions out of curiosity and nice conversations will start. 🙂

The shoes will fit like Cinderella

Another great thing about Hoi An, and an absolute must do, is visiting the tailor-shops for custom made shoes or clothing. You can be absolute creative and the prices are astonishing. I saw some beautiful leather flip flops in the shop window,  but there was something missing. When entering the shop, they came with a lot of catalogs and we could start ‘cutting and pasting’ to design our own flip-flop. So next to tailor-made shoes, clothing and flip-flops, it is also possible to design your own clothing and get creative. 🙂

Tailor made flip flops from Hoi An - VietnamThe quality is quite good, and if you’re looking for the best tailors in town you should trust the reviews on Tripadvisor. And in comparable with European store prices, the prices for tailor-made clothing are even lower. So a tip if you go to Hoi An during your Vietnam trip, make sure your back is empty enough for some new sets of clothes. It’s really worth it. I still wear my leather flip-flops on every sunny day. 🙂

PS, don’t mind my feet. I am not exactly a “foot model” 😉

Hasselt, surrounded by the water

Waterwefollow a travel, lifestyle and fishing blog

Hi guys,
Very welcome to our blogwebsite; waterwefollow!

We are Rutger and Marije. A couple living in the charismatic little town Hasselt, Netherlands. A lovely old and historic town surrounded by water.

Before you go on to read all of our blogs, we would like to tell you why we do what we do here at waterwefollow.

Rutger is a fanatic fisherman and he likes the search for new fishing spots where he could catch his predator fish. In his workingday-life he is a salesman of boats. Well more exactly, a salesman of fishing boats. So he is working with his hobby almost every single day, happy him!

Marije is a food-fanatic, loving the chase after special and not (yet) familiar places around the world. In her workingday-life she is a marketing business-adviser for a packaging producer. Mostly food- and beverage related, so everyday she finds new and nice food- or beverage products on her desk.

So you could say that we both have the change to be busy with our hobbies everyday. But, how about doing things together? Well, it was sometimes really hard for us to find some time together because we are both very busy with our work and hobbies.

That is why we tried to find a mood where we could as well enjoy each other, as enjoying our hobbies. We have asked one another what we liked most of all and how we could combine it. We both love to travel towards places we have never been before. But if we go somewhere, we always follow the water. Once we see water we both get instantly happy. And near that water you will always find the other ingredients we both love:

  • Fishing
  • Lovely restaurants
  • Interesting people
  • Traveling

Long story short: ‘Waterwefollow’ was born.

We now go chasing to new fishing spots together, meat interesting people over there and go hunting for new and lovely restaurants to explore in that area. We like to share these experiences with you via our blogs.

With these blogs we hope to inspire you with beautiful places we have seen, interesting people we have met, the nicest restaurants we have visited and some nice fishing spots. But most off all, to inspire you to seek a combination / balance of live where you will get very happy about as a couple together.

Happy waterfollowing!

Cheers,
Rutger & Marije
